Department of English Language (UG-SF)

Vision

To imbibe the students with moral, national and cultural values through Language and Literature.

Mission

To empower the students with English Language that is expressive, powerful, dynamic and relational, by offering a holistic approach encompassing LSRW skills as to influence and alter the world in a positive way.

        The Department of English Language had its humble beginning in the year 1995 with two faculty members. Now, It is supported by a committed team of Twelve faculty members who aim to impart quality education. Heads of the department over the years include:

  • Dr. CHRISTOPHER RAMESH M.A, M.Phil, Ph.D.,  (1995 – 2000)
  • Dr. B.KATHIRESAN M.A, M.Phil, Ph.D.,  (2000 – 2005)
  • Dr. N.RADHA M.A, M.Phil., Ph.D., (2005  to Till Date)

      The Department serves as the backbone in enhancing communication skills among the students of all UG-discipline. From 2016 till 2022  it shared few literature papers of UG literature department for academic enhancement. With its long and distinguished history, the Department following the foot path of the management ensures to develop language skills with ease that helps the students to tap the potential of English more effectively for their personal and professional use.

       Every year, the syllabus is revamped on suggestions from erudite subject experts, trainers, alumni, students and parents to enhance the student’s communicative functions in academic, social and work situations.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE DEPARTMENT

  • The department is well in advance to meet the challenges ahead in the fast changing scenario.
  • It plays a major role in empowering the students with self  confidence.
  • Every year Bridge course is organized for all the first year (UG/SF) students during their inception to the college, to bridge the gap between college and school.
  • A platform is created for the students to orient themselves through the program. Counselling and guidance is given to the needy students and they are channelized for part – time jobs.
  • The faculty partakes in academic activities like: Panel Member in Staff Selection Committee, ISO Internal Auditor, Resource Persons for interdepartmental and inter collegiate programmes, Guest Speaker, Judges, Moderators, Rapporteurs and Programme co- ordinators.
  • They are also active members in the editorial board of NGM Times, ( in house bulletin) and coordinators of NGM Quiz Club, Vox Populi ( English voicing forum), Media Projection, Personality Enrichment Programs (PEP), Soft Skills and Developing Communication Skills Programs.
  • The Department is a partner in BEC program, Finishing School Program, NET Coaching Class, Certificate course in Home Science and Editorial member of Diamond Jubilee Souvenir, and Fluency programme.
  • It also acts as a consultant for corporate advertisements

INFRASTRUCTURE

      The Department is well equipped with a library consisting of 500 books, four PC with internet and two printers and has access to practical usage components like Virtual Library, Smart Board, ICT enabled classroom, Google classroom, and subject link to YouTube.   It has two language lab to train the students in Spoken English.

RESEARCH ACTIVITY

        The Department provides hospitable environment for research.  The continual participation of the faculty members in National / International Seminars, Conferences and Workshops enhances research activities. Every member of the department has published and are publishing research article in UGC Journal / Books with ISSN Number. The department has published nine books including revised editions. Books have been published in collaboration with Aided English Department and oflate independently. The articles received from all over India were selected and published in book with ISBN number

PROGRAMMES ORGANISED

      The department frequentlty organises Guest lectures, Workshops, Seminars and FDP concentrating on LSRW skills by eminent literary scholar to usher in modern innovative thinking in the field of language and literature.  To encourage latent talents the department organises competitions like Cookery, Rangoli, Poetry, and Drawing. It promotes creativity and supports Linguistic diversity.

EXTENSION

        The department feels proud in extending its service to the rural society in the form of extension. It stood one with society in imparting basic English knowledge and environment consciousness to the primary school children in and around Pollachi.

ACE:

The Department of English Language was initiated in the year 1995 with two faculty members.   Designed to cater to the needs of the college campus, the department has expanded to twelve faculty members over the years. With its long and distinguished history, the department’s association ACE (Association of Cosmic English ) aims to enable the learners to communicate effectively and appropriately in real life situations.  The significant objective of the department is to develop the intellectual, personal and professional abilities of the student’s community through receptive and productive skills of language.
